Share
If you're on TikTok, in Asian grocery stores, or you love anything Japanese, you've probably already seen this glass bottle with a marble stuck in the neck. Yes, we're talking about ramune !
But what exactly is it? Where does it come from? And most importantly… why is there a marble inside? 👀
What is ramuné?
Ramune (ラムネ) is a super popular Japanese soft drink, especially in summer and during festivals.
The word “ramune” comes from the English word lemonade , pronounced with a Japanese accent. Originally, it was a sparkling lemonade, but today it can be found in many different flavors:
-
Original (lemon)
-
Strawberry 🍓
-
Melon 🍈
-
Litchi
-
Blueberry
-
Yuzu
-
And even more fun flavors like bubble gum!
It's sweet, sparkling, and ultra-refreshing.
📜 A bit of history
Ramune has existed since 1876. It was introduced to Japan by a British pharmacist named Alexander Cameron Sim , based in Kobe .
At the time, soft drinks were seen as healthy (yes, really 😅). Little by little, ramune became an iconic drink of Japanese summers.
Today, it is a symbol of nostalgia in Japan. They can be found everywhere during matsuri (summer festivals).
🔵 The coolest thing: the famous marble!
OK, let's talk about what makes ramune really special.
The bottle uses a system called the Codd bottle , invented in the 19th century by Hiram Codd .
How does it work?
-
The bottle is made of glass.
-
Inside, there is a glass marble.
-
The gas pressure pushes the ball against a rubber seal.
-
Result: the ball seals the bottle naturally!
When you want to open it:
-
You remove the plastic.
-
You use the small pusher provided.
-
You press hard.
-
POP! 💥
The ball falls into the neck.
And there… you can drink.
🧠 Why doesn't the marble stop you when you drink?
Good question!
The neck is specially designed with two small notches.
When you tilt the bottle, the ball fits into these notches and lets the drink through.
It's clever design + a bit of physics (thanks to gas pressure 👩🔬).
🎎 Why is ramune so popular with Gen Z?
Because :
-
It's Instagrammable
-
It's fun to open
-
It's different from regular sodas
-
It gives off a Japanese/anime/summer festival vibe
-
And clearly… the pop of the ball is satisfying 😌
It's an experience as much as a drink.
👨👩👧👦 Is this suitable for families?
Yes! It's a non-alcoholic drink, often enjoyed by children (to be consumed in moderation, like any soda).
A little tip for parents:
Keep an eye on the smallest ones when opening, because you have to press quite hard.
✨ Fun facts
-
The marble doesn't come out of the bottle (it's too big for the neck).
