It all began in 1912, in the United States, when Clarence Crane, an Ohio chocolatier, was looking for an alternative to chocolates that melted too quickly in the summer. The idea of a hard candy was born. But instead of producing an ordinary candy, he was inspired by ring-shaped life preservers. This is how Life Savers appeared, with their unique shape meant to evoke a life-saving buoy — a brilliant marketing trick that immediately made an impression.

A sweet success

In 1913, Crane sold his invention to Edward Noble. Noble did not just produce Life Savers: he invested in a massive advertising campaign, placing the candies in grocery stores and kiosks, often right next to the cash registers. Success was immediate.

Life Savers were initially offered only in peppermint (the famous Pep-O-Mint flavor). In 1921, Life Savers Five Flavor, a mix of fruity flavors, made their appearance and became an instant classic.

The evolution of flavors and shapes

Over the years, Life Savers have seen a multitude of flavors come and go: cherry, lemon, orange, raspberry. Some have become staples, others have disappeared to make way for new experiments.

In the 90s, the brand launched Life Savers Gummies, a chewy version that quickly found its audience. The same family also gave birth to Creme Savers, those creamy swirl hard candies that remain among the most nostalgic in the range.
