PEZ—The candy dispenser that spans generations
Share
There are objects that stand the test of time without aging. The PEZ dispenser is definitely one of them. 🍬
For over 70 years, these little dispensers have been a hit with children... and adults! Here's everything you need to know about the cult candy that never goes out of style.
🏛️ The History of PEZ
PEZ was invented in 1927 in Vienna, Austria by Eduard Haas III. Originally, it was a peppermint lozenge intended for adults who wanted to quit smoking — the name PEZ, in fact, comes from the German word Pfefferminz, which means peppermint!
It wasn't until the 1950s that the famous dispenser with a character on top was created — and that's when everything changed. Children loved it, and PEZ became a global phenomenon!
🎭 The Most Popular Characters
This is where PEZ gets truly fascinating. There have been thousands of different dispenser heads since its creation:
- 🧙 Harry Potter and friends
- 🦸 Marvel and DC Superheroes
- 🐭 Disney Characters
- 👾 Star Wars
- 🎃 Seasonal Editions (Halloween, Christmas, Easter)
- ⚽ Sports Editions
Some rare dispensers are worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars to collectors!
🍬 PEZ Candy Flavors
The small rectangular PEZ candies come in several fruity flavors:
- 🍋 Lemon
- 🍊 Orange
- 🍓 Strawberry
- 🍇 Grape
- 🍒 Cherry
Each dispenser holds a dozen small stacked candies — and the motion of pulling the head to get a candy has become iconic!
👨👩👧 A Candy That Spans Generations
What's fascinating about PEZ is how it unites generations. Grandparents who had them as children in the 50s-60s, parents in the 80s-90s, and today's children discovering the same dispensers with modern characters.
It's more than just a candy — it's a shared memory, a collectible item, a gift that always brings a smile! 😊
