PEZ was invented in 1927 in Vienna, Austria, by Eduard Haas III. Originally, it was a mint lozenge intended for adults who wanted to quit smoking — the name PEZ, in fact, comes from the German word Pfefferminz, which means peppermint.

It was only in the 1950s that the famous dispenser with a character on top was created. Children loved it, and PEZ became a global phenomenon.
